Alternate one solid yarn with one slowly-self-striping yarn, and make this very wearable artpiece. Yarn thick enough to see and manage, which makes a quicker shawl knit than other shawls. Breathtaking!
Colorama is shaped as most of a circle. It will not fall off your shoulders while you move, and is flattering to many shapes and heights.
The patterning is all done on the knit side. Eyelets with zigzag/chevron patterning make a simpler knit than many shawls, with all of the visual “pow!” Test knitters regularly commented on the ease and pleasing rhythm of the stitch pattern.
The design is worked from top down. This means you can stop when you run out of yarn, or when you like the look.
Don’t limit yourself to literal sizing on this one. The blue one wrapped around Lindsay's neck in the photo here is the XS/Sprite. The Goddess size is generous for drapey, luxurious wrapping even on smaller folks. I also have two Goddess-sized friends who tried on the Diva (M-L) size and felt it warmed their shoulders without getting in their way. Sizing is very flexible, depending on your personal style.
Yarn: Two contrasting yarns, one solid (MC) and one slowly-self-striping (CC). Either sportweight or fingering/sock weight (one of each works great, do not feel you must match... different yarns make a more luxurious fabric).
Yarns used in sample shawls:
- Cascade Heritage
- Marks & Kattens Fame Trend
- Elsebeth Lavold Silky Wool
- Noro Silk Garden Sock
- Kauni Effektgarn
- Brown Sheep Nature Spun Sport
- Drops Alpaca Sport
- Crystal Palace Mini Mochi
: Size 8 US/5mm circular needles, at least 28"/70cm long. Longer cables will make the final rows more comfortable.
Gauge: Approximately 4.5 stitches = 1 inch in Stockinette. If you know you usually knit very tight or very loose, adjust needle size accordingly. Also, if you choose one or more sportweight yarns rather than fingering, consider moving up one needle size for a slightly more relaxed gauge.
sprite (xs) / princess (s) / diva (m–l) / goddess (xl–3x) all shawls shown measure 42-52" wingspan & 17-19" length, depending on yarn, gauge & blocking method. bust appx. 36 (41/ 52/ 55)in., 91"(104/"132/ 140)cm.
