Brian’s Hat

Sunday, November 6th, 2005

hatWhat a difference blocking knit items can make! Brian’s hat was unevenly knit and unruly when I bound off. It was floppy and huge when wet for blocking. And now that it is dry, it works just fine.

This hat is not like my normal knitting, but it was made to order. It is the color of Brian’s coat. It folds over so that it can cover the ears with more layers of warmth. And it’s ribbed, which means it can get stuffed in his pocket for storage, with less danger it will fall out of the pocket. It’s washable soft wool, so it’s comfy and carefree, and will deflect rain on Brian’s walks.

If I did it again, I’d do it a little differently. I’d do it on smaller needles so that the fabric would defy wind better (this was made with light worsted weight yarn on size 5 needles). I would make it just a little bit shorter or just a bit longer… right now folding up the edge once makes it seem a little too long and twice is a little too short. Just the same, Brian thinks it is “perfect” or at least said so. He’s easy to get along with!
